Archaeological Fieldwork on Rebun Island, Japan 2011

A Typical Day

Located in the town of Funadomari, accomodations are a Japanese-style hotel. In the immediate vicinity are the beach and a small inland lake.

Our planned schedule will be as follows:

  • 8:00 - Breakfast
  • 9:00 - Work
  • 12:00 - Lunch
  • 13:00 - Work
  • 16:00 - Quitting Time

During working hours, volunteers engage in a variety of activities, including digging, drawing, photography, topographic survey, and GPR. On certain days, small groups may also explore the area around the site to identify resources, landmarks, and other important parts of the surrounding landscape.

Work continues until lunch at 12:00 pm when team members are given an hour to eat lunch or go into Funadomari town. Work resumes at 1:00 pm and continues until 4:00 pm.

After dinner, if a lecture or labwork is not scheduled, participants may explore the town, socialize, or catch up on other work.

Participants have all weekends off unless poor weather has hindered excavation progress and disrupted the schedule.

Rebun is known for its hiking trails and wild flowers, making it a wonderful place to spend free time.

The West Coast of Rebun Island

As it will be summer, Rebun Island will be warm. Typical temperatures reach the high teens to low twenties (Celsius). However, being on an island, there will likely be many chilly, windy, and rainy days and Rebun in particular is known for unpredictable weather during July and August. Volunteers are expected to pack clothing that is appropriate to a northern maritime climate in the summer.
